Spring Terms 3 & 4
Dear Parents and Carers,
During term 5 JK Rowling class will be following a theme that focuses on Plants, through our IPC topic ‘Roots, Shoots & Fruits’ .This will provide a cross-curricular learning path for the children to engage with in order to learn in a fun and creative way. During this unit we will be focusing on Science, D&T, Geography and International, but will make links with across all subject areas too.
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
• What plants grow in our local area
• How to sort and group plants
• What the parts of a plant are
• The function of roots
• What plants need in order to grow
• How flowers attract insects
• How plants reproduce
• How seeds are spread
In International, we’ll be finding out:
• Why we need to save rainforest plants
In D&T, we’ll be finding out:
• How to make a seed disperser
In Geography, we’ll be finding out:
• About the tallest plants in the world
What you can do to help...
Point out to your child the enormous variety of plants that can be found in your neighbourhood and how these plants are adapted to their surroundings. discuss what plants need in order to grow and how we can look after plants – watering, feeding, pruning and so on. Find out why flowering plants need insects for pollination and how different plants reproduce.
If your child has some work to research, please help them, but without actually doing the work. if you have the chance to further their interest in the ideas of this theme please take it, but your enthusiasm and interest is most important.
If you have any comments about the work your child has done, please get in touch.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Rushton, Mr Moody & Mr McLean
