ST. URSULA’S SCHOOL Burnfoot, Wigton, Cumbria CA7 9HL Telephone 01 6973 44359 Fax 01 6973 44420 Email: stursula@btconnect.com ________________________________________________________________________ 15th July 2009
Dear Parents,
I write this letter with very mixed emotions – sadness, regret, thankfulness and happiness all intermingled.
Regret that we have come to the end of an era that has lasted for 62 years.
Sadness that in these days of economic crisis and increasing officialdom other children will miss out on the joy that has been St. Ursula’s School.
Thankfulness for the people I have been privileged to meet and teach during my 25 years at St. Ursula’s.
Happiness for the love, smiles, fun and families that have made this School what it is.
Yes I am sad but I have so so many happy memories of the children who have passed through these doors. Anna Ford (the newsreader – before my time!!). As a rugby fan I look at Philip Dawson who, until recently played for Newcastle Falcons and Captained England Saxons, and now playing for Northampton Saints and remember him as a young boy from Caldbeck with a cheeky grin. Charlie Cox, now a doctor in London and presently working for 6 months in Africa, Andrew Reay in the air force and getting married this weekend. Two lovely ladies in their late 60’s who came to visit recently and kept me entertained with tales of St. Ursula’s when the Sisters of Mercy were here – there are too many wonderful memories for me to recount and the joy of those children will remain here in the very fabric of this building.
Our last year has been busy and the Staff have enriched the curriculum with lots of exciting, interesting and informative trips throughout the School Year. These have been enjoyed by staff, parent helpers and children alike.
Who knows what our future holds but if I could dwell on the past for a moment, I would like to thank everyone who has made my life at St. Ursula’s a memorable one. I would like to thank Mrs. Hellier who is retiring and going to have a wonderful time looking after her young grand daughter Annie. Mrs. Hellier has been a cornerstone of St. Ursula’s and has produced some
brilliant singers and musicians over the years. She is a talented singer and musician picking up and playing any tune even with ‘twiddly bits’. Nothing ever fazed her, she spent many hours writing ‘band’ pieces and pouring over music books gaining many accolades at our Local Music Festival. Latterly she has been a great help to me and I will miss her enormously.
Mrs. Hutchison also deserves a huge thank you for keeping me sane and smiling through some difficult times. She is one of the most reliable, honest, kind, helpful, committed and dedicated people I have every met.
May I also thank Mr. Tony Palmer, Mrs. Raimes, Mrs. Maxwell, Mrs. Harris, Mr. Cass Senior and Mr. Cass Junior, who have helped out unstintingly this last year in many varied ways.
We also say goodbye and thank you to Mrs. Susan Harrison, our lunch time supervisor. She is loved by all the children and I know it was a huge wrench for her to leave the children she has loved and nurtured over many years. I am sure she is giving the same dedication to the old ladies and gentlemen she now works with.
I wish our Year 6 leavers Jenni and William well, and I am sure they will continue with their good work at their next school. They are both helpful, caring children and will be sadly missed.

Year 2008/9 100% Attendance Certificate - Toby Have a lovely summer break and I hope St. Ursula’s will continue to be remembered in your hearts as it is in all the children and Staff who have walked through our doors. IF I KNEW
If I knew the box that was large enough To hold all the frowns I meet, I would like to gather them every one From the nursery, school or street, Then, folding and holding, I’d pack them in And turning the monster key I’d hire a giant to drop the box To the depths of the deep, deep sea.
If I knew the box where the smiles are kept, No matter how large the key, Or strong the bolt I would try so hard ‘twould open I know for me. Then over the sand and sea I’d cast, The smiles to romp and play, That the children’s faces might hold them fast For many and many a day.
Anon Yours sincerely,
Mrs. J. Monkhouse
